FSB stands for the Financial Services Board, which was a regulatory agency in South Africa that oversaw the country’s financial services industry until 2018. The FSB was responsible for supervising and regulating a wide range of financial services providers, including banks, insurance companies, investment firms, and retirement funds.
The Financial Services Board was established in 1990 under the Financial Services Board Act. Its mandate was to promote and maintain the stability of South Africa’s financial system, protect the interests of consumers, and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
In 2018, the Financial Services Board was replaced by two new regulatory bodies: the Financial Sector Conduct Authority (FSCA) and the Prudential Authority. The FSCA is responsible for regulating and supervising the conduct of financial services providers, while the Prudential Authority oversees the safety and soundness of financial institutions.
The FSB played a crucial role in the development and growth of South Africa’s financial services industry, and its legacy continues through the work of the FSCA and Prudential Authority.
