Why is the Hang Seng Index so important to traders?

The Hong Kong Stock Exchange is one of the largest and most well-known stock exchanges in the world, and the Hang Seng 50 represents one of the fastest-growing markets in the world.

The Chinese economy has boomed for the past 4 decades and Hong Kong has been a global financial powerhouse during that period.

Many of the world’s leading financial institutions are included in the Hang Seng 50, and their performance can provide important indications on the health of the Chinese market, as well as the health of global financial markets as a whole.

The Hang Seng 50 is a free float-adjusted market capitalization-weighted index.

What this means is that the value of the index is calculated first by multiplying the total value of your shares outstanding by each of the latest selling prices of the securities, and then weighting that in relation to the size of each of the others.

Next, the float factor is designated for each security to account for the total number of shares held publicly, as opposed to those owned by the company or a government body.
