AUSTRAC is the Australian Government agency responsible for detecting, deterring and disrupting criminal exploitation of Australia’s financial system. It is the financial intelligence unit (FIU) of Australia and operates under the Anti-Money Laundering and Counter-Terrorism Financing Act 2006 (AML/CTF Act).
AUSTRAC collects and analyzes financial transaction reports, which are submitted by financial institutions, bullion dealers, and gambling service providers. The agency uses this financial intelligence to identify potential criminal activity and to support law enforcement and national security agencies in their investigations.
In addition to its intelligence and regulatory functions, AUSTRAC also provides education and guidance to reporting entities and other stakeholders to help them comply with their obligations under the AML/CTF Act.
